Where Life and Work Takes You
Have you heard this story before? Man/boy/pretender: Excuse me, uh your not working enough? Could you please do a little more? Ya know, I know someone, I can get you a job. It doesn't have to be f-o-r-e-v-e-r! Just a little something to help you help me because I choose to do nothing and pretend I have this business.
The intelligent woman stands there, head tilted, and ask "what exactly do you do? Remind me again?" From where I am standing I see; a piled-up collection of old tools and supplies left over from a job done 5 years ago. Her mind searches and she ask, "where exactly have you been applying yourself? As she laughs/ says. "and you can help me?" She Continues on with, "the only thing I have seen you apply yourself in; has been in some outdated haunt talking the same speal appearing in the same old work tee and boots... grabbing that beer at noon. Tell me again, how do you get your paycheck?" {does this Sound familiar?}
Imposter syndrome is alive and well. There are many people out there pretending by all accounts just talking about what they do never applying themselves to an industry. They have collected all the bells and whistles seemingly allowing them to appear as if they have "this business" When in actuality it is a mock up hoping someone will buy into what they are saying they do and will take a chance and hire them with no proof or testimony, no business card or video to prove they can actually do the job. The buzz word here is TRANSPARENCY.
Any person can obtain a license or a certificate and never do anything with it other than to hold it, frame it, hang it on a wall ...or brag how they went to school to get it. Now, this does not take away from the hours spent in the classroom having a desire to achieve something better than what they already know. What good is it though, if that person is afraid of what real success looks like, doubts their ability, skills, and talents; persistent in their fear never allowing themselves to actually pursue why they went to study in that industry, to begin with? People love to talk a good game and never have the chutzpah to back it up.
What I find even more ironic is the person who finally gets a job and they get themselves so overwhelmed by the task they have been hired on to do. They start tail spinning before it even starts. Numbers roll around in their head, material cost, labor hours, down payments, installments and final monies that they dread they will have to collect( before the job has even started). Overthinking, did they bid it enough or not enough and then will stall weeks out to get the job going. {does this sound familiar?} I am amazed by the number of contractors that I have personally known and this is how they "live" their so-called business.
I've also known a number of hairstylists that have gotten their license and have messed up more than once with clients and started doubting their ability to keep going. The excuses, it takes people to build a successful business and I don't know how to attract clients or worse... fear of word of mouth has gotten around and they are afraid of a reputation. Rome was not built in a day. Yes, this industry tough because it's based on the superficial client but that does not mean that person can not "do" what they feel was the strongest skill set while learning and just apply that to start. Continue with the class that has given you the most problems and Offer free as you are working on a more problematic issue and then there is always the "dummy head" This industry is about confidence and the art of style! Listening to what the client wants and seeing his or her vision through your creative eye!
As a business coach, I have heard quite a few horror stories. My years as a former bartender, I have heard outrageous contractor stories wondering how these people even show their face. Example: contractors were doing an add on. The general contractor was waiting on another trade to finish what was started so he could continue. He had a deadline. While waiting on a different trade he started in on another project redoing the floors... sanding had already been done, the first layer of varnish applied and now the general contractor was applying the second coat. Very wet and fresh, the other trade finally showing up and not paying attention, walked across the wet varnish leaving a mush of dirt and debris along with footprints, setting the general contractor into a rage... needless to say the tradesperson never came back to finish the job.
People do talk and word of mouth says everything in a service-based industry. Reputation is built on actions and how people apply and back up what they do. Choosing to be a business coach was an easy "think" as I slowly put years of business mindset ideas into place and started teaching my law of attraction class, I could see how people wanted to learn more and take their skill sets and do something more than just have a hobby. Often times a chronological order does not apply. Happenstance and how life aligns you with different choices and how a person decides on that path depends on where that person is in life at that current time.
So what does a business coach do? I'm glad you asked! Let me give you a simple version: My first and foremost that I ask a student/client/customer; What's your idea? What business do you have in mind? Do you have any skill sets to apply? What are your strong points? (I don't care about your weaknesses. It shows up without me asking) What do you currently do now? Why? When did you get away from your original goal? How old were you when...? Do you journal? Are your thoughts written down? Do you doodle? What, where, and who inspires you? Who do you follow? What's your style?
That is the beginning a small portion because all of those questions have answers and a life map that was forged. This teaches people to see how, when, and where, and why it has gotten them to this point right now. {taking this class from me BECAUSE THEY WANT MORE!}
From there once the business has been determined, we talk about how to implement, licenses if needed! (thats a big one) Accounting procedures, organizational tools, and supplies. Business cards, flyers, videos, photographs... advertising/social media/ blogs etc...
Then we discuss target markets. Who is their client and or customer? Who needs their service or product? We talk worth and the proper amount to charge per... We talk about TRANSPARENCY allowing ANYBODY AND EVERYBODY to see what they do! To be successful by today's standards you need to be willing to show that anybody and everybody other glimpses into your life. {and if sitting on a barstool in an outdated haunt is part of your daily schtick odds are you are not going to be successful. Just because you wear the garb, it does not afford you that business you pretend to do!}
Over the last several years I have been very lucky to take some wonderful trips. (Getting out of your current space changes your perspective and gives you fresh clarity) Through all of those trips, I had taken some fun and beautiful pictures. All of those pictures are proof to back up the lifestyle I have been living. Through those pictures, my view matched with words abling me the ability to show what other people can achieve if their intentions are put into the right purpose-filled direction. My mission very much explaining love what you do. Be passionate about what you are able to do and do it without expecting a dollar amount to be attached to it but knowing a dollar amount will follow. Allowing people to see who you are and allowing them to get to know you because you have connected with them on many levels. Then through those levels people will want to buy from you or will want the service you offer because they want more from you. It's called being an influencer. You have inspired and influenced someone to want something you have to offer.
It's such a big world out there and traveling to me has been just a part of who I am or what I have to offer. I have said over and over, I can do what I do anywhere! I can take my work with me on the road, from behind a computer screen, or in my home studio. How I choose to lend my hand in another industry is because it's a part of my conditioning that has allowed me to have another type of income! It is the residual incomes that sustain us in many forms so we can survive. These things too I teach in all of my business classes.
Have I convinced you yet? Are you mulling it over in your mind that your life and how you make money is not enough? Did 2020 not leave you chasing your tail going in circles wondering why life has not been enough to keep you happy and sane? You can not keep doing the same thing expecting a different result! When you choose the same you get what you got! and that is just YUK!
Imposter syndrome sadly is very real. Don't be that guy! Don't allow it to become you! Before I plan my next trip, let us talk. It is a very big world when you get off the only 2 streets you know! Stop talking to the same 10 people in the same old ugly environment keeping you stunted from where your life and work is supposed to take you!
