Do You Really Know What It Takes...
Have you ever wondered what it really takes to be an effective boss? Have you ever looked at your boss or the person you work with and wonder if they got their skills from a piece of paper in a cracker jack box? How many times have you turned your head sideways questioning the motives of your authoritative's irrational behavior towards the people who work for them?
C'mon we have all done it... we all have wondered how certain people get in the positions they are in when we know they are no more qualified to have a staff, run a business or even talk nonetheless to anyone in the public. Just because someone owns a business (you hope they are qualified) to run a staff and do it in a professional manner. Any person in an authoritative position... just because they demand respect, it does not mean they deserve the respect nor will they ever gain it if not leading by example and showing respect to the people who for them and are loyal to them.
I have seen it in so many different types of industries people who abuse their authority. They absolutely do not appreciate one thing any of their staff does. Their mood fluctuates like the weather and most have to walk on eggshells deciphering how to approach at any given moment. The authoritative micromanages so tightly they lose control over not being able to control the things they would typically be able to effectively manage because they will not trust nor delegate authority and divide responsibility. They scream at the top of their lungs and their irrational accusations incriminate their ability to function in general and mostly under pressure. They refuse to take responsibility for their own mishaps... and they blame others for their own lack of accountability in the business. Often times, as a business slows, has turnover of employees and shows no economic growth the employer will place blame on the staff instead of seeing it for what it is... Bad management!
I learned from the best! (many years back) As the event coordinator and the office manager for a large banquet facility, I had a staff of 40 under me! I was taught: YOU LEAD BY EXAMPLE. YOU NEVER ASK YOUR STAFF TO DO ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD NOT DO YOURSELF. YOU NEVER BELITTLE AND MAKE EXAMPLES OUT OF ANYONE THAT WORKS FOR YOU IN FRONT OF ANOTHER EMPLOYEE. YOU NEVER SHOUT AT ANYONE IN A WORK ENVIRONMENT AND YOU NEVER SHOUT OBSCENITIES TOWARDS THEM. YOU DO NOT LEAVE GENERAL DEROGORTORY NOTES FOR ALL TO SEE ... AND MOSTLY, YOU STAND BEHIND YOUR STAFF. SAFETY ALWAYS COMES FIRST... AND IF YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO BE IN A BAD SITUATION YOU DO NOT PUT SOMEONE ELSE IN THAT POSITION EITHER.
I had found when I was dealing with my kitchen staff, I had a chef, a sous chef, 4 porters, 2 dishwashers and 3 kitchen preps. We thoroughly would go through, what was to be ordered for the event at hand. Each was given a task and what was to be expected... There were time restraints for what time food ordered was to be delivered and cooked. There were so many plates that needed to be dished out in a timely manner. It was nothing for me to be in that kitchen at the time of serving...elbows deep in salad or the entree, dishing and plating what needed to go on to the tray to be served!
My serving staff and my bartenders, they were expected to dress accordingly and be floor presentable to the guest. Neat and tidy, and ready to go... I would help load up their trays, get stands in place and have backups for whatever was needed at the last minute. My bartenders were stocked. Fruits cut, and cups and napkins in place. If it was a cash bar. Money was ready to go and no one had to scramble... for a thing. If they needed anything, I was there to run and go get it! My staff I trusted. My staff I helped in numerous ways. My staff I respected and my staff, I realized the importance of them being there. Not only were they there to work to earn a dollar but they were there to help me to run a business! It was a mutual respect... and loyalty was beyond without a question! I was blessed and fortunate! I ran that business like it was my own... my respect for the man that did own it... showed me the utmost in trust and delegated the authority to me because he respected me in return and trusted I would do a job well done!
People climb ladders because they take the time to learn how a business is to be run effectively. People own business because they actually have a real interest vested and they are not there just for the bottom dollar line. No business is going to run itself and if you are not hands-on and in during business hours you defeating the purpose of having a business. A staff is only as effective as the management that is structured by implementing daily routines every day... not just a few times a week and expecting things to run like clockwork. It takes money to make money and if you are not putting in your own money at times to see the operation run at its full potential then you have no business being in business! You invest in what you believe in! Even if it means you personally go without. You have people who work for you who are depending on you to keep the doors open. It is not their responsibility to keep the doors open for you!
I have learned the hard way and seen first hand... loyalty goes only so far and when the loyalty is abused... the respect is immediately diminished. When you know the person is being talked about and the only person who has defended their honor in an absence and they continue to scream at you over a situation that could have very easily been handled differently... there is no reason to continue the relationship in any way shape or form and all respect has completely gone out the window, questioning the authority and the power one holds... and you have to ask, WHY ARE YOU EVEN IN THAT POSITION... when it is very apparent to everyone that walks through the doors patronzing the business... there is a reason why the business is not doing so well.
For the last several years, I have studied behavior and work ethics, hence why I decided to help others in striving to brand their identity and help market what they are actually good at! Some people have no business doing the work they do... and sadly that is the truth!
