Funny About Choices
I try to understand what the heart wants and why it chooses the way it does... and what the mind talks it into.
I recently posted on my Facebook Writing Page a little meme about choices. What we pick, why we pick. It is of some importance to our heart and I can imagine what really makes it soar. I can guess the flip side to that would be the easiest choice and therefore settling for the consultation... second choice... A matter of Convenience; thinking well this is all there is.... or should I just walk away!
That reflection may very well be the premise for both the books I am trying to write. I have two strong female types that have a lot of responsibilities. Both are very capable of taking care of themselves but are both determined to hang on to what their heart desires.
The two hierarchy types both believe that if you love enough and stand steadfast in commitment all things work out. Although the types of men both these characters love have been significantly damaged by past traumas and a lifestyle that resulted in suffered consequences. Deciding they need no one at all other than the occasional ________ (oh you can fill in the blank on that one) Cheap thrills that take care of a moment and here now both have been introduced to these women by a kismet type fate that captivates their heart (yes men have a heart!) but because of never choosing ... they do all sorts of odd bad behavioral activities that keep them settling with poor options.
Jocelyn my character in Seaside Shore... independent caregiver/ taker. She has inherited a resort that has seen its better days. Still occupiable, she is trying to find the best options to run, fix and make better... for the sake of all. Collin is a drifter who stays at the resort out of convenience. He is contracted by an outside source that runs an offshore oil drill. His choice in woman has been, to say the least, cheap and undesirable for any long term anything. Jocelyn and Collin form this bond based on a built friendship and when things get a little too close he runs and hides out to sea... His thoughts, "why I can not have anyone like her! What was I thinking"... although while he is gone doing whatever oil drillers do... he can not shake all the feelings this woman has brought forth, therefore he throws himself into his work and hides behind oily machinery and smelly unintelligent men., and when he returns chooses to run around with women of a lesser character. With all this happening and him playing his foolish manly game, a businessman who happens upon the resort falls madly for her... he is good looking, he is wealthy and he wants to take care of her but she wants no part of that because she has fallen ridiculously head over heels for this drifter... Well after a serious accident out in the ocean, Collins body had not been recovered. Still holding out for hope... the businessman makes his play. Leaving her with choices...
Grace is my character in Game Changer, she is a highly attractive executive secretary for a mob boss that runs an influential art gallery. The mob boss has the mayor in his back pocket. Due to a discrepancy in city funds, the mayor decides to pull three of the main utility companies together, water, power/electric and sewer to recoup funds. (which ends up being something completely different) Jess/Jake (can't decide on his name) Has been hiding out for years... running from an incident that happened 30 years ago. He is just the lone maintenance man that stays to himself by chance he meets Grace over a bad plumbing incident... they form a friendship. He is secretive. He tells her only bits and pieces from his past but they get extremely close. He does tell her he has run out on everyone he has ever loved. It is the only information he divulges. The mob boss is tipped on who he is and Well as it is had... Saunters the person in charge of the big 3, was the operations director (30 yrs ago) that knew Jake/Jess and all the details of the covert affair that killed Jake/Jess's wife. Saunters, holds all of this over his head forcing Jake/Jess to take a job working in another covert affair ... hiding and going underground deep in the cities tunnels where they are manufacturing/growing "Organics" (I'll leave that at that for now!) Determined to find out what is going on... she treads in a place dangerously too close for both their hearts.
*** don't ask me why my mind works like this... it just does! LOL
Now both of these women could leave it be and go on to something else... but they don't. Their heart is set on getting their man and getting to the bottom of all this nonsense that stems from a fear based on guilt.
Maybe like real life, you want what you want and you are willing to get down to the nitty gritty on choosing.

It's not settling for, it's not the consultation prize... it is what the heart wants. It's the conscious decision to pick because it is what your heart tells you to choose!!
We can not help who we fall in love with... it happens without warning and or disclaimers.
Just ask my characters...
