A Ride Like No Other...St. Louis Carriage Company
If magical and nostalgic is what you are looking for when scoping out the local sights in St. Louis, then look no farther. The grand-esque view offered from this type of transportation mimics something right out of a classic movie! This picture perfect "ride" is a splendid way to travel and explore the attractions of our glorious city!
Nestled in the heart of downtown STL, "St. Louis Carriage Company", located at 1000 Cerre St., stables, care-takes and offers marvelous carriage rides by the most majestic equine known to this city. Next to our own regally famous Anheuser Busch Clydesdales, these beautiful 16-18 hand Percherons are willing to draw you around in elegant style.
Since 1985, Greg Streeter, Owner/Proprietor has dazzled St. Louis with his horse drawn carriages and Trolley street cars. In the beginning his original warehouse was located on Chouteau Ave. In 1991 he moved to his current location on Cerre street.. Today the immaculate spacious stables is housed on a large maintained plot located close to Busch Stadium. Streeter's original mission was to " have one of the top carriage companies in the country with the finest quality draft horses and beautiful carriages" Today the mission is the same!
The day I visited, Manager, Jennifer Emigh, who has been with the company since 1992, graciously introduced me to her finest... The gentleness of these giants... amazing. The cleanliness of these horses... impeccable. Each horse is washed and groomed daily before their drive and after. Complete with scrubbed concrete floors that are maintained on a daily basis so that there is a healthy transition into fresh and clean stalls upon leaving or arriving.
Being introduced to Chuck, I stood before this blackened Percheron beauty, leaning down he nudged me a kiss. I asked, "Are they always this loving?" " YES!" was the loud answer I received. Jennifer went on to say, "They are raised with care and have been bought mostly through Amish auctions. These horses are specially trained. They have adapted to human touch from their routine feedings, daily grooming habits, general medical maintenance, and special treats. The love and genuine care from all the employees is what make these healthy animals tame."
(These Percherons are fed a healthy feed blend. Their diet is a pelleted 10% mixed with sweet feed in occurrence with extra biotin added in for their feet, plus strategy and beet pulp is added in the mix. The magnificent creatures also receive healthy doses of carrots and apples for treats.)
Along with Chuck, Honey and Scout made their presence known. An adorable pair of Paint and Palomino ponies were all too happy to get in on this photo opp! Pony rides are also made available through St. Louis Carriage Company for private and special events.
Dan, Magnum, Chuck and a few others pull an inertia driven carriage, light in weight (1200 lbs)These 2200 hundred lbs horses move with grace and ease, offering a leisurely drive . Amish made, these fantasy light weight wagons are made in the USA. Each vehicle has a permit of it's own and is regulated by the city of St. Louis.
**All horse driven carriages are staffed with trained and experienced horse handlers.
A variety of carriage styles are available for your choosing, including a fantasy Cinderella carriage . The assigned rental time can be anywhere for 15 minutes up to and 1 hour. They usually are seen driven all around downtown and available for private events. Carriage rides are available every night of the week (weather permitting) and pick up location is in front of the Old Spaghetti factory. (Please check website for rental rates)
And... if horses are not your thing???
Then "Clang, Clang, Clang went the trolley." By reservation, these turn of the century replica trolley cars are available for a wide variety of special events, custom tours, weddings and more... (call to inquire and reserve your trolley 314-241-1400) Currently St. Louis Carriage Company owns a fleet of 9 trolley cars. Streeter's goal for the future is to add limos and party buses, so he can offer a full service of transportation for any kind of event.
Yes, there is plenty of fantasy, magic and nostalgia from this company! There is a lot to be said and offered from this no non-sense horse business. Whether you are looking for a romantic rendezvous, a family outing or just a nice little trollop from an era gone by, my money is on the horses! (oh wait that is another story!) But seriously this a gallop of a good time!
